Well it's a fact quake movies are better overall but this is also a good movie. it's worth a 7-8 imo. Nice frags on good players. Good editing as in not too many special effects, you can still appreciate the frags (sometimes that get's lost with a lot of fancy effects)

I don't get the bitter rivalry. Different games, people like different things.. don't get why some can't accept that. Anyhow, It was a good movie. I wish someone could use such special effects to make a good Warsow movie. I couldn't really decide which one I liked more, this or replication x.

Thing is, people on the UT side generally accept it, and even embrace Quake as a "brother" game more than a competitor.. but a group of people on the Quake side do not have the same sentiments ;P

Give me a break :P I played Q4 from the beginning, and was called a Q4 fanboy here at ESR back then. I have been to ESWC to see Q4 finals twice. I have had this respect for Quake in the back of my head in every single post I've made about "Quake vs UT".

Well, Quake has a couple of problems.

1. No 'pubbie magnets'

Unreal Tounrmanet is widely regarded as a game that you can hop into a server and just play a mindless deathmatch on and maybe get a few frags. However, Quake has a reputation of being a "pro" game with regulars who have been playing Quake since the begining who rape newcomers to the game.

2. iD Software itself

ID Software does not necissarily embrace the 'pro' community. From what I've observed, iD software simply releases patches that fixes bugs, and seems to be almost completely oblivious to the needs of the community. If I recall correctly, there were some Q3A patches that actually removed some of the physics tricks because someone at iD thought that it was silly for people to be jumping around like maniacs, and said physics were only put in after considerable protest of the community. And of course, they released the attrocity that was Quake 4 without even glancing at any of the advances made durring Quake 3 through modifications such as CPMA.

The thing is, it seems to me like iD software treats the Quake series as if it was Unreal Tournament. Have you ever seen an iD software employee bunny hop? Do you think iD can grasp things such as item control? Good map design? Or do you think they just map out what they think looks good on paper and feels 'fair' to a casual deathmatcher and then shits it out without actually bothering to analyze it from a competative level. Think about how many iD/Raven produced maps have come with the Quake series. Tons, right (6 from Quake 1, 8 from Quake 2, dozens from Quake 3 and 4). Now how many of them are actually worth playing? Quake 1 was their freshman effort, so DM1 and DM5 being bad is excusable, and most of Q2's DM maps were at least passible, if not "Holy Shit The Edge". But it seems that once you get into Quake 3/Team Arena and Quake 4 territory, a good portion of those maps have terrible layouts and are not worth playing, and most of the decent maps have come from the community.

The thing is though, in spite of all the problems with the Quake series, it's STILL better than Unreal Tournament. (Okay, let's just assume for the sake of my little triade that Quake is actually an objectively better overall game) And it's completely on accident. From my observation, Epic takes the EXACT same approach to game design that iD does, except they seem keen to to avoid the 'accidents' (such as a functional console, bunny hopping, etc.) Except Epic seems to also understand what pubbie players want, and create things to satisfy them (see: all the stupid and useless mutators, Onslaught, etc.) iD (Raven, but iD still was pretty involved IIRC), on the other hand, seemed to be content with just slapping a wannabe Quake 3 into their newest experimental engine, tacking on a retarded single player, and calling it a day.

The thing is, Quake needs the fanboys. Quake NEEDS the people to continue to try and shove "QUAKE IS THE BEST" down peoples throats, because iD software certianly wasn't helping them do it. I say wasn't because from last count there are six new projects going on at ID and related studios, and four of them are Quake Arena style games. The only question is, will they actually take another GOOD look at why people still play Quake all these years later and play on their strengths, or will they fumble around and make yet another Quake 4? Quake doesn't need yet another half-assed effort, it needs ingame movement and gameplay tutorials (So pubbies can learn how running item respawns is important in duel, or how timing the quad can shift the entire match in TDM, for example) , a few pubbie friendly gamemodes with enough maps and interesting gimmicks to make pubbies not get bored after 2-3 maps, a clean interface, a working warmup/ready system, working brightskin and model forcing, radio binds "Incoming enemies!", voting, QTV, well designed maps for traditional gametypes (Duel, CTF, TDM), and maybe even a matchmaking system if they feel like getting fiesty. Oh, and it'd help if it didn't look like complete ass in the process like Quake 4/UT3, and look more like UT2k4/Quake 3 Arena, which both had brilliant artistic direction.

This isn't the late 90's. Quake isn't going to go flying off the shelf like it used to. It needs to have these sorts of features out of the box so competative players can take it seriously while at the same time making a game that pubbies want to play, but more importantly making it easy for pubbies to see the things that good Quake players see in the game. The thing is, if iD drops the ball with Quake Zero and Quake V, and we don't figure out a way of getting new players soon, then Quake is going to become a relic, and that's a god damned shame because for people who honestly don't find Unreal Tournament style shooters fun, there's no real alternative to Quake. (Well maybe Warsow, but honestly I think that it mixes the formula up way too much for most traditional Quake players.)

So yeah, that's probably why you see Quakers go out of their way to flaunt Quake and also troll UT.

I'll believe it when I see it. As for if I actually beleive it out the gate, it's a mixed bag, because although Doom 3 and Quake 4 were both huge disappointements, ETQW is probably my favorite game this year. That's a strike against iD Team 1 and Raven, and a win for Splash Damage, but in all fairness Doom 3 was a single player game first and foremost, and Raven has been the very definition of mediocrady since they've existed so nobody should have been surprised.

We'll just see how 'in-touch' with the community this 'iD Team 2" actually is. It'd be nice if they had a community forum like ETQW's.

Now, I completely agree with you that UT seems to have more pub appeal in general. There are many reasons for this, for instance that the learning curve is smoother, without the steep bump that strafejumping represents. This means you can always instinctively see how the guy who just beat you, is better. The consequence is especially that mid-level competitive gaming is very fun. And that even as a complete noob, you can go to some mad mutator server, find other noobs, and get the feeling that you can do well.

However, what we don't agree on, is that there is some kind of quality difference between Quake and UT. As one of the few here who can tolerate both platforms, let me say it once and for all; the fact is that Quake is superior to UT in some ways, but reduced / inferior in others. Simple as that.

The only reason why Quake seemed more "pro" and had more "pro players", is because it was The Big Name, which got all the sponsorships. Tournament managers pick games nowadays based on the exact same philosophy; they pick something big and well known. To be honest, I think a lot of Quakers got their egos a bit too inflated because of Quake's lucky position in big tourneys. Many here firmly believe that Quake has a god-given position of its own among competitive games. And they feel that tourney guys nowadays have "sold out" by dropping the platform. The fact is, they have always sold out! Quake was just the highest bidder at the time.

But yes, you're right, if the next iteration of Quake wants to succeed, it needs to tend more to the pub scene or "noob base". Q4 was hopeless in this regard, you couldnt get into a server without downloading pak003.313.pak, and everyone remotely competitive shut themselves in in private servers, to a large degree.

As for getting publicity, UT3 will be an XBox / PS3 / PC - title, which is going to give a lot "wider" publicity around the name itself. Seeing that Quake only has Q4 and D3 to back it up; as a fan of both platforms, UT is my best bet at the moment, without a doubt.

2k3 was a huge failure at release time, still, the split was UT 50%-50% UT2. Compared to Quake, ending up at: Q3 80%-20% Q4 (or worse). Imo this is related to fanboys who had already decided that gaming starts and ends with Q3.

A game needs fresh blood and fresh hype continously to stay alive, once you decide that a game can't be improved, you effectively kill it ;(

actually, q4 had quite a lot of ppl playing in the first season, just look at clanbase, and nobody was playing q3 anymore, 2 seasons later most of the q4 players stopped playing alltogether or went back to q3 cause q4 was just so horrible and didnt get fixed in time.

Well, tbh I think a lot of you were exaggerating when you considered it "horrible". I think Q4 offered a lot of adrenaline-packed gameplay, and let you display a wide range of skills.

Sure, it didn't have what Q3 had after 8 years ;P. But for me, the main disappointment with Q4 was the generally negative attitude about it that people insisted on reinforcing and exaggerating.

Experience in a game (knowing the skill required to pull certain things off and how to use maps) makes it more fun, so of course a new game will seem to suck more, and have less "personality".

thats a lot of teams imho, and those are only the ones that played international, but it fast started to shrink, and thats mainly cause of the game. So dont say ppl doomed the game before they even played it.

Honestly, do you think it's too much to ask to have the advances that have come out in Quake in the last seven years to be included with the damn game? Back in the 90's when Quake was the only game in town, you could afford to wait a year or two for KTeams or Lithium or OSP/CPMA.

This isn't 1999, new Quake games need to have that extra layer of polish that used to be up to the community to provide from the start. I'm not saying that the system has to be perfect, that each map needs to be 14k gold, but things like tutorials, warmup, brightskins and other things that make the game playable at a competative level need to be in there from the start. It's no accident that every single Quake game has had this kind of support modded in, the players need it.

Unfortunately, yes - this is too much to ask for. The ones who truly care, maybe a few hundred people; make up at best 1% of the total sales volume. Or to pamper us, the impossible to please competitive community?

So then we have the current rules for esport platforms:

1) a game branch will need regular "sensations" of some kind, to not die off / diminish in size. The most obvious being sequels. Thus, for the esports aspect not to die off, the community also needs to pass to the next sequel.

2) The releases need to have a heavy noob appeal to be able to grab the new players it needs. So the developers need to make a game, first and foremost, for noobs. Whether the game gets high-level "cred", boils down to luck.

3) The old version will have an amount of perfectly adapted community mods/maps and patched gameplay; the sequel will lack all of this for at least a couple of years.

That competitive gameplay evolves from year to year is part of what makes eSports great, but you have to tolerate that it is being brought back to scratch from time to time.

Good points imo :) I think the whole discussion about which game was better is totally useless. It's made up from a lot of bs points. The games are just a slightly bit different, but that's it. Maybe the quality is different, but really who cares... It's all about gameplay. I think that ut99 and q3 both had very well balanced gameplay. It's just a shame that both devellopers hardly pay attention to that. They hardly try to satisfy the need of experienced players to have good maps and to listen to the comments they gave to other game versions. Imo they don't get that they could use us very well. If they would ballance out a game very well, then we are the onces doing a lot of promotion with friends. We also provide the community with nice matches to make examples in the game. If it wasn't for movies like fooze where I saw sick examples of what can be done with the game, then I doubt I would have played it as long as I have now. I also doubt that I would have promoted the game to so much friends then. All my ut friends are now playing warcraft 3 next to ut. Why is that game still succesfull untill today? Well they have been updating it like 100 times now allready and still do. Blizzard understands the importance of gameplay and top players very well.
I can understand why the devellopers of both games don't care that much about this. It's not really important in short terms, but in the long terms they are killing both game series.

The whole premise of my argument assumed for the sake of argument that Quake was objectively better than UT3 (and I even said so in my...I suppose you could call it a thesis). I know you think UT is better. We're never gonna come to a concensus on that. What I'm trying to do, though, is try and explain the Quakers prediciment from a Quakers point of view.

And I'm not sure what being UT3 being multiplatform is supposed to prove. After all, Quake 4 was also on Xbox 360.

UT isn't better per se, I consider the platforms about the same in terms of competitiveness/spectatability. What I was trying to say, was that UT at the moment, in terms of marketing position etc, is the strongest DM FPS alternative in years.

As for the Quakers' predicament, as you call it, I don't think it's a valid reason to flame and be childish in threads by and for UT fans. Trying to kill UT3s release and all that crap. From my point of view, their "predicament" seems to be a stubborn inability to face the facts and see the situation for what it is.

As for Q4 on XBox 360, without mouse / keyboard support, and having to compete with Halo.. that's not really a valid comparison with UT3s monopoly position on the PS3 :p

First of all, UT3 has far from a monopoly on shooting games on the PS3. Ever hear of Resistance: Fall of Man? How about Warhawk?

And LOL, you think that people flaming on ESReality is somehow "killing" UT3. The game itself is doing a good enough job of it on it's own, thank you very much. (lol 33,995 copies since November).

Nah seriously wata, UT3 is great. I don't know yet if it's going to be big, but it's fun as hell. If UT2k3 was what UT3 is now, it would have gotten all the UT99 fans over, it would've been huge.

I am not a big fan of UT at all but I must say, top notch video I really liked it. My only gripe would be the text at the begining ... kinda lame compared to everything else. Music worked, excellent special effects and camera angles. 8.5 out of 10 stars. I would of given it 9 but its not Quake :).
