Unfortunately, anyone who's managed to avoid suffering through Steam so far won't realise you're not joking.

Steam is fine as a distribution method - it's just combining it with Source Engine games that's a horror.

Honestly, the Source engine is most well coded engine I've ever seen. The game looks amazing, and still runs very well. It's extremely better then the shitty DOOM3 engine.

I don't think he doubted the quality of the engine, but combining steam with it IS a horror, and there is no doubt about that. It has caused endless problems.

Steam is shit. If I buy a game I want it in a box and I want to install it wherever and whenever I want without going online to install the damn thing. And it's "nice" to see how they make a nice profit since they don't have to burn cd's, make game manuals and boxes and you still have to pay the full price.
Steam is the worst thing ever and people should be shot for it.

Well, I too prefer to recive a box, manual and all that, but Steam has it's good sides too.

I don't have to bring a bunch of CD's/DVD's to be able to play a game on a computer that isn't mine, I just log onto my account and download the game.
Thanks to Steam, a whole bunch of older games are avaliable again (atleast here in Sweden Quake 1-3 is impossible to find and there are people asking where they can buy these games from time to time).

The cost of printing manuals, boxes, and CD's/DVD's might be gone with Steam. Instead they have to pay for bandwidth, costs for the personnel maintaining the system, developing the software, and things like that.

but you still you have to download and if your friend or someone has a modem or you just wanna play on some laptop, it's pretty annoying to download few gig's in order to play the game.

yep I saved CS:S once... it was about 4-5 DVD's, so again you need cd/dvd to install/play the game

You didn't really understand what's been said. Yes you can buy the game in the shop in a box BUT when u want to install, say HL2, then after installing you have to connect to steam and dl all necessary files and get the approval from steam that you can play it offline and I'm talking single player here.

Thats hl2 the subject of this topic is othe rcompanies selling there games over stream, in this context its id, and highly doubt t hey will force you infuture to use stream if you bought the game in the shop

It'll ask you weather you want to play offline and then you click 'yes' and play offline. Amazing innit?

you still have to go online and dl the files and then you have to specify if you want to play online or offline meaning you have to be connected to the internet. I nebudi stalno dosadan i ti.

Hehe,nope. You just install hl2, and double click it's icon in steam, no need to go on line.

then they must have changed the thing coz when HL2 came out you had to go online to authorize the game and then you had to set offline in preferences menu but most of the time it would just hang around 99% and you had to wait for 100% in order to play it offline. In addition to that, I even read that on steam forums, that you had to disable auto connect in order to prevent steam connecting to their servers so you don't have to wait for the authorization.

Could be true about auth, I haven't had that since I buy my stuff on steam. But you don't have to dl updates, just dicsonnect and go offline it works fine.

Those easily translate into shipping, cost of sales personel, building a store, cost of storing and things like that.

The good thing is that the updates for different games can be downloaded a lot more easily. For example for CS you had to wait several months for each new version, while now the developers can just patch the game directly and everyone downloads it through steam pretty fast.

Steam is fantastic. If I buy a game I dont't want it in a stupid box and I want to install it wherever and whenever I want without using old cd's. And it's nice to see how they make a nice profit since they don't have to burn cd's, make game manuals wich I never read and boxes and you still have to pay the full price.
Steam is the best thing ever and people shouldn't be shot for it.

The one and only. I don't care if it doesnt detect 100% of all cheats but shitload of cheaters get caught and banned since its updated on daily basis. Also, unlike punkbuster it doesn't lag the game so much it becomes unplayable. Oh and... you don't need go manually update,since your cheat protection has a bad hair day, just to find the same bot cunts as happy as ever when you return. :)

That would be freaking great if they were to eschew PB for VAC. I would gladly register my Q3 key through steam just for that reason.

VAC is better than PB, it does not lag as much and detects approximately the same % of cheats

well its hillarious they offer 'all the quake games' in a pack, but q4 isnt in there... obv they dont count it

I like stream, comp shop closed in town which leaves me to buy from overpriced woolworths or mail order, im an impulse buyer i dont like to wait :D
