Perhaps you should read what I say properly and read the comments of her pictures again as well. I said she reads the articles. It is important for an gamer to be knowledgable in what is going on in the industry and she is no exception.

Also the comments to her pictures were fun and sporting, not in bad taste. Altho there are exceptions as found here when pictures of any female are posted. Unfortunatly that is how life is and we all must learn that.

I said that Fatal1ty treated her equally becuase he has. Many haven't but he has. He even had her sit with him and other pro gamers during the Quakecon 2006 finals.

She chooses her hobby. She wants to be more than a player. She is interested in all aspects including other players, new products, and event coordination. She also is in the design aspect of games. She is what she wants to be with full support. You should try it sometime, it is fun.

I started motorcross at 3.

It is actually not considered an allergy, just a condition, but it is easiest explained as an allergy. Basically if she is outside she starts to have reactions such as hives, spider veins and rashes appear on her body. It can go as far as dibilitating her immune system and swelling her body up so she can't breathe. It is also varieted by the time of year. In winter the UV rays aren't as strong, so she can be outside longer, and in summer she should only wlak to the car and back really. :( It also causes such reactions to certain food with yellow in them and sulfer products.

Anyway, thought I would explain it a bit better.

Does sunblockers help in any way? Must be tough to live in the shadows, literally =P

Anyway, I really hope that doesn't stand as a major problem in her life. It's tough to see other kids playing around with no concerns, and trying to make the little ones, or even grown ups for that matter, understand how life is unfair.

there was this one awesome program at school that took most of the troublemakers to a prison. the people talking were on death row, and they were free to insult, yell at, and threaten these kids to scare them as much as possible. i can tell you that there have been a lot less violence in my school :)

Nobody is "putting" anything on her, sounds like she chooses to enjoy this herself. She does this as part of her playtime, I don't think shes missing out on much, if at all, compared to the other kids. Or perhaps we are more intuned to what our kids want. As the article states we talk with them and play with them as well. Having a hobby where your parents are as much or more involved in it as we are is a very good thing. Plus it is all in how a person views the game. Do they see gore and killing, or stratigic gameplay? Can they seperate reality from gaming?

I don't think it is right for anyone other than the parent to say if this is bad or good for their child. When our options are so low in something they can be a part of, this really is a life saver. I would rather they have fun play something they love, become a part of a group and organization, pursue other interests involved in gaming and live happy.

My kids are homeschooled as well. I think I know what to do with my kids :P

I'm currently 19 yrs old, played games since I was 10/11, my first game was prolly Contra, can't really remember. The game wasn't rated for my age, I played sports besides casual gaming aswell. Then I mostly played FPS's with loads of gore and I'M NOT a violent person, I BARELY had a fight, just when it couldn't be helped. My parents never told me anything about the gaming-reality conection.

So, what I want you, is that the violence and gore in the games have nothing to do with the persons' personality, as long as she's well educated, learn to respect the others and the older she'll have no problems in her life. I see your point, but I fail to see how a game like Q4 can have a negative impact on a kid, specially considering the kid is being supervised in this activity. And the nature of the game does not come anywhere close to imitate real life in any way, so I can't see how this is going to influence the child's behaviour in real life situations.

I always found most of those rating stupid, mostly because they rely on wrong concepts to start with.

No way. For starters, the game's framerate has nothing to do with the monitor's refresh rate.

Well, Q4's single-player campaign is pretty hardcore if you ask me. I mean, that whole "Stroggification" (or whatever it's called) part is really nasty to be watched, specially when they cut your legs and insert new ones. But if she only plays the multiplayer Q4, then there's no problem I guess.

And, well, if I had a kid with this so-called "daylight allergy", I'd be getting a Nintendo Wii as soon as possible. That thing seems to be the ultimate indoor activity and since this girl already likes gaming and her parents also encourage such thing, playing Nintendo Wii could become something really great.

Well, good luck to the little girl in her gaming life. I have a 5 year old niece and up to now I have only been able to hook her up on Katamari Damacy. :|

I bet there is zero research on this type of thing. Of course someone will bring up CHILD PORN which is something totally different. It's like saying that violent films turn people into murders when the only cases of people watching violent films is where they have been used to "train" the person watching into being violent.

Now I'm not saying it's appropriate for a child to watch porn but to be honest I don't see how it's going to destroy their lives either.

Doesn't really take a lot of research.
Maybe a hundred years mayn families lift in huts with just one room, and in lots of countries that is still the case and they usually have more than on child, I don't think the send the kids out when it's time to make the next one. Plus in lots of cultures everybody runs around naked...
might not be "hardcore" porn but I really doubt those kids show any abnomal signs. After all it is natural.

Considering that we play with them when it comes to video games, I don't think you are getting the point or situation. I am not handing them mature rated games ( And rated by whom anyway :P) and then letting them lock themselves in their room to play and take what they want from it. We live in a very open household, not like many in this country. I doubt you can understand our situation past what you read on the outside. I agree many kids should not play video games with mature content, but it really depends on the level of parental guidance and activity.

Yeah, now THAT (homeschooling) I think it's not good for kids. "Regular" school is good to develop social skills as well, that kind of interaction is essential.

Don't get me wrong, I'mpretty sure the education your kids get @ home is fine and most likely better than the "regular" one in a technical point of view.

Well many reasons. There is a certain plateau that public school gets to when you have a child that excels, or there are spots that get sticky that they lose hope and can't show the child the right way to understand. Being their mother I know them better than anyone. I know what subjects they excel at and what ones they need that extra help in. By home schooling them I can help them become better at all subjects and give them the opportunity to really succeed at the subjects that they are strong at. Plus we knew when Sync took the job we had no idea the school systems we would be moving into and that we may move multiple times and at odd times in the school year. This gives them stability in their schooling.

In the time I have home schooled them, the children have excelled beyond expectations of even me. They have completed 2 grade levels in a years time. We are slowing down a bit to enjoy non core subjects such as music, art and other languages. Things they don't focus on too seriously in American schools at an early level.

Plus things like photodermatosis makes them stand out in a school and peer setting. They can't go out and play on the playground, so they are different. This subsides many of those problems.

Personally, I think the whole point of school if learning to learn. nothing more nothing less. Yes, people also learn fundamental things, but it the end that education is never really enough. Take Languages, for example, everybody learns a lot about them in school but in the end the only fluent speakers are those who use it outside of school.
Now, you can teach those fundamentals in homeschooling just as well, but one of the most important things nowadays is working in a team and also learning in a team, and that includes seeing how other people behave when they fail at something how they learn, etc.

Also, in my opinion teamwork can really only be learned in a homogeous group, i.e. with children pretty much the same age and degree of knowledge. And these are things you simply can not teach at home. Especially when it comes to the part where the team (of children) assess their leader (teacher) and complain about him.
So, I believe you should maybe go on with home schooling until he fourth grade and then seriously consider sent her to a normal school to get those social skills (plus almost everyone has their first romance with a person from his/her school ;) )
As for learning those social skills over the internet,which someone brought up here (?). i don't think it will really help because a huge part of communication is non-verbal which is simply not transmitted, which in turn makes discussions on the internet such a pain.

Well, uh, sorry if this text is a little long or sounds way to instructive. I'm just one of those "let's tell the world my thoughts" - trips 8|

Anyway, I do have one last point.about being afraid to send your children to school because they might be treated different, yes that might be the case but not neccessarily in a negative way.
My sister's girlfriend works as a special teacher in "integration classes", which means a normal class gets her as a second teacher and also 2-3 mentally handicapped children of the same age group. And she says it works really well, once the situation is explained the other children actually take care of their new class mates instead of making fun of them, so, I believe and hope that sending your children to a normal school would definately work.

That works to a degree, but what about when they don't have anyone show up to their birthday party because they are weird or contagious? Or not being invited to such things for the same reason? Kids can be cruel, and teenagers can be worse. There are pros and cons in every situation and we chose the best route for our children given both sides.

And teams can come from many aspects. Not just school. Thanks for your input though it was well written and conceived.

good point, though I would think that is more up to the respective parents than the children, cause in the end they are little humans and as such afraid of what they don't know.
I think if you approached some of the other parents and they in turn talked to their kids it would work, but then again I'm usually hopelessly optimistic.
On the other hand, they still would have their friends you talked about, who probably will come. And then there are also other kids who have no allergies or diseases and still don't have many visitors on their birthday, so basically it's a "risk" for everyone.

In the end, I think if you behave like here and tell everybody about her condition openly as soon as it comes up, other parents and children will appreciate that and accept it.
And if you're honest which children would yuo rather have as friends for your kids, those that think they are weird or those that are more open minded ;)

The thing is you can't protect your kids forever, thats the biggest issue.. as harsh as it sounds, they need to learn how to deal with people who perhaps treat them differently, not only for themselves, but to understand why other people may get abused for whatever reason.. they need it to be able to understand human nature.

one day they will be out there, and the world of work can be very similar to school in the way that people will always be people, and there will always be that one guy who haves a crack, or whatever.

Social interaction among friends, neighbours kids etc is of course a good thing, but they need to be exposed to the negative stuff as well to prepare them, in my view :x

Oh they are. I don't think any one can protect their kids from being bullied, criticized or whatever else. It is a part of what makes human human. Sadly enough anyway. I gave a simple example based on what his example was and it is one in a million types of things that can and do happen. But again as I said, we of all people know what is the best learning, enriching, and social environments for our children. You all have great intentions but when the day is done we already made our choice and are VERY happy with it. As are our children.

Thank you all for your concern and ideas, but really every life needs some positive in it and when it came down to it public school had none. I am happy to see them love reading, love exploring the world around them and not afraid to ask questions. We have only been home schooling for 11 months at this time, we have tried many options and this is what works for us.

Plus how many schools offer game design at an elementary level? ;)

I think most kids would be extremely lucky to have parents that care half as much as you guys do. it seems shocking that some parents dont have that much forethought for all this sort of stuff, but its all too common these days, especially over here in England.
I hope you guys haven't been offended by all the "advice" or suggestions people seem to have been giving, I think its mostly just curiosity... and a lot of us are somewhat envious of the world that crystalynne is beginning to explore, and the bright future that she will have ahead of her :D

best of luck to her, and maybe when she's older we will see not only a true pro, but a role model to other younger female gamers, something which i never had :D viva la revolution!

I mean, before the teen-ages, school was basically just running around and playing from what i recall, no one really cared about "shitty"(I-want-it-burned-down) school at all. But from 13 and up I became more self-aware and wanted to learn certain things properly in school; from there on out I think I've been in constant contempt of the way they try to teach, and I can say without doubt that the academic learning the last 6years before uni, has been at least a 80% waste of my time and a degradation of my curiosity about many subjects. It'll be interesting to see now, with all the new science about the brain, how long it will take them to implement any system that is not based on age-old myths and traditions with anecdotal evidence for its efficiency.

I agree. Especially in e.g. History where all they taught in my school was WW2/Nazi Germany and a few other mid 20th century boring subjects such as Civil Rights in the USA, they didn't even go into any of the interesting elements of these topics....

yea i also feel the same. for the sake of example, in science, teachers try to shove facts into your heads. instead of the alternative being that, they teach you how the answer is constructed, so that you yourself can work it out from scratch, and exams aren't merely memory tests. i always felt contempt towards these ways of teaching, that seemed to limit everyones ways of thinking and learning.

Sp, even if they had taught a little better, I would have had to relearn it at university ayhow. Teachers simply cannot be at the same level as professors at universities.
And things I was interested in I could also just learn for myself, read newspapers etc. But in the end i do have lots of good memories from school and stuff related to it, which I really wouldn't have wanted to miss.

Sure, you could learn things by yourself and you probably have good memories from social relations, but I feel a lot of time was wasted in the classroom listening to the "grouped learning" that everyone was supposed to tune in at equally, the kind of learning that has almost no focus on individual interests, learning methods or capabilities. I don't know how to make it better altogether, but school seems more like a tradition than a scientific method to educate.

You seem opposed to homeschooling as if public schools are no problem. I agree that there is a lot of social learning going on in public schools, but on the other side of the coin it is a horrible choice when one considers the way most of them are teaching, especially to those for whatever reason, are not "normal". There is a great lack of specialized and individualized learning. I'd have just thought you'd be more.. readily understanding when people chose it, and see that either way, homeschooling or not, can be a problem and for some homeschooling may be the lesser "evil".

u cant keep u kid in a bubble for their whole life, they need to understand the positive and negative results from socialising (e.g. insults) and on a practical basis not just theory like her mom saying "some ppl are ignorant and dont understand things so theyre mean" they need to actually develop their own ways of dealing with it or theyll end up being 30 yr olds crying in the toilet at work being unable to deal with a sly remark

Its her own doing. She's used Razer products for the past 4-6 years. They suit her well as the Diamondback and Krait are smaller low profile mice. She's always enjoyed speaking with the Razer staff at events, they have been some of the most receptive of all vendors that she actually enjoys the product that they make.

I would take issue with the name but not the concept. Considering how many leagues and tournaments are requiring their competitors be 17 or older, a few minor leagues wouldn't hurt. But tournaments will succeed over online leagues as age verification would become a major issue.

Depends on character i would think, i've never taken any dmg from watching anything or playing anything. I was watching 18+ "all the time" at around age 8, and the only thing that I can recall as scary or frightening was an article in a magazine I read, about a woman that died in a fire because she was locked and trapped inside her own house :\

And that reason is that a lot of parents do not spend enough time with their kids to monitor what they're doing and provide counterweight to certain influences (like those from violent games/movies). Hence the state jumps in with some rudimentary rules to provide some protection for children whose parents neglect them.

In this case, the child is obviously getting more than enough attention from the parents, who are in a far better position to deal with the possible negative influences of a hobby she enjoys than any lawmaker is. I think it's far safer to let a 8 year old with good parental guidance play violent games than some 18 year olds.

I think her parents have a healthy view/approach on how to raise her(and her brother). Many seem to consider schools a place to dump their kids and pursue a career. I think those children have an unhealthier environment than Christalynne.
I mean, how many kids can say they share their dad's _and_ mum's hobby :)

Nice article. I got to play a few games online with Starbuck back before the last QuakeCon, and if she starts kicking a lot of butt at big tournaments several years from now, I won't be a bit surprised.

That's too bad about the whole photodermatosis thing....but, as they say, life is not so much about what happens to you, but how you react to it, and it sounds like she's enjoying life and doing the things she wants to do. Best of luck to her.

Sync and Lilie, tell Starbuck I'm up for a game or two whenever she likes. (And whenever I'm actually home and online, which doesn't happen as often since I started a new job last week.) And maybe I'll actually do a better job of running into you guys at QuakeCon the next time around, too. :)

Only when you are putting strain onto your wrists/hands/etc.

This is where being "comfortable" comes in, for example don't have your wrists on the edge the table with your arm going below as this puts strain on your wrist and the repitive actions cause damage.

Just look at the date of that article, 2002, now look at some of the things it talks about, having to "convince" employers that the condition is real. Now if you ask me this sounds a lot like people didn't know that using equpiment in certain ways would lead to problems, and guess what it does.

If you know about the problem and how to at least minimise it then you're not going to run into these serious problems.

I've been playing pc games since I was about 6/7 heavily (as in really heavily) that's 13 years of using keyboards and mice and I have never ever felt any problems (Not that I don't understand your point about me only being 19 but I reckon I've used PC's a lot more than some of the people that get RSI etc.).

Just take a look at 2GD, he was fine for years, then in an attempt to improve his game he switched his mouse technique, he quickly got RSI.

There is more emphasis on the strain than the repititive part.

Moderation: You can play a lot/heavily and still be playing in moderation, especially if you know the risks that are out there and take the correct counter measures (e.g. don't leave your wrist hanging over an edge).

people saying kids shouldn't play 18+ games... well yeah, of course they shouldn't get used to weapons and killing people screaming and other stuff.. but quake 4 MP isn't about those things and i think most people know it.

if you are a person with problems you will get affected even by the age of 16 or 18 or 20, it's all goes down to who you are. let me put it like this, people were killing eachother even before video games.. i don't think it has any affect other than kids beeing chocked.. seeing that she choses to play the games herself i don't blame her parents :)

Any of the sonics really. My son is a huge sonic fan so we have all the games, comics, cartoons, movies, ect.

I think they play Sonic Riders and Sonic Adventure X battle 2 or something insanely titled like that. :P

haha, I used to paly the original Sonic level so fast the game locked up cuz the vertical scrolling could not keep up. Good times;)

Sonic lost it's charm for me after the Mega CD version.

This is a bit off topic but what about (wwe)wrestling thats a "male dominant" (Sports Entertainment) much like gaming its the same thing but they have 1 body running the shows and they got every chick on the front cover of playboy that participates to "perform in the Ring" it also makes it fun to watch just for those few glimpses and notepad storylines they are implemented into (i would put sport but you know how many wrestling bashers are out there) Problary spark up eSports and have a new spectator if we started that haha!

News like this doesnt even have the slightest care amongst the world there are black kids out their starving poor kids out there homeless but we have a girl here who lives home all the time and has taken up a profession as the next "Fatal1ty" good luck i say but its not front page news i was taking out great players in arcades in Tekken when i was 10 but there was no evo 9 years back.

And lets not go arguing about equals in the end it is still a computer game and in some silly way males have an advantage over females in clicking a mouse.

Do the numbers it makes sense that the dominate pro players are male. I don't see your name on the top 10 either. The Frag dolls came in number one and two in the cpl winter on the xbox. Do some research before saying such statements.

Being a gamer isn't about being the top player all the time, sure for pro gamers it is, but being a gamer is just playing games and enjoying that. MOST gamers aren't pro, and most male gamers aren't in the top 10 so stop using that excuse against us.

Unfortunatly there is a bit of sex appeal alreay on esports with all the booth babes. Not very rewarding for us females, but it is there. Nor is it a very good role mmodel for future gamers.

As far as the news goes it is just as much news as any of the other players joining or playing games again. She has competed in events and it is neat and unussual. It is a nice story that a lot of people enjoyed.
