I don't see the beauty of that game, RL and Shaft are so damn overpowered and the other weapons are more or less non-existent. The Shaft is just some kind of instagib weapon, while a single hit by a rocket means that you'll get thrown at least once across the whole map. I agree this might be fun at times, but overall it just looks like mad rocket spam with some unstoppable lg action in between. :(

Q3 is pretty poor by gameplay standards. There's an over-powered spawn weapon, a 25h bonus for dying, piss-weak armors that all do the same protection and count down, no special movement abilities like ramp jumping or double jumping, weapons that are all uber and therefore reduce arming yourself to simply (run for the nearest gun) instead of the choice of the close shit gun, or the far good gun... Again, I could go on for a while about idiocies in various games.

Nah, cooller relied very little on rail compared to other topplayers (he still isn't a "railer" in Q4) and yet he was the best. Shaft was just as powerful as rail on LAN. And RL was extremely useful as well, especially during defensive play. Even PG was relatively strong and GL was very important on ZTN for example. All the weapons were useful in different situations (even MG for finishing off opponents when LG couldnt reach). So you would see a lot of wonderful weapon switching and combinations during matches.

The balance between the three prime weapons (RL, LG, RG) was really good. While they were completely different, they complemented each other extremely well (throw him into the air with RL, rail him mid-air and finish him with shaft etc.)

More like cooller just didn't attempt to out-railgun zero4, for OBVIOUS reasons. In that cxg tournament elpajuo really showed how a constantly on fire railgun will rip ANYONE up. The LG is a bit strong, true. But it's hardly an instagib weapon (which are slower ROF weapons for starters). Even if you shaft an enemy with 1h, you still couldn't gib them, which requires damaged them to -40h.

As for the RL, it doesn't throw you across the map. Also, if you can't dodge the rocket, you deserve to get knocked around a bit. It's a projectile weapon after all (ie: it can be dodged), unlike eg: the RG in Q2/3/4.

The beauty of the game is armors that aren't piss-weak, spectacular movement, the lack of cess and monotonous pixel railing... I could go on for a while about the gameplay merits of various games. It's not perfect, but it's the best vanilla gameplay of the series.

Glad someone also sees how the railgun is way too powerful and takes fun from the game away.

Ever since the rail got so dominant close-combat has really been reduced to a few random moments. And in-fights (at least to me) have always been the most fun in FPS.

the LG in QW is even more dominant than the rail in Q3... in Q3 you see more weapon switching and combinations. The gameplay is just a more diverse and balanced. And while QW is faster, Q3 just requires a more balanced skillset of movement, aim and strategy.

Being able to glide smoothly upstairs, around the map, in and out of battles without clipping walls and aiming at something before you can even see it makes a major difference. Just look at the attacking players with good movement (cooller/z4muz are the mega obvious choices here). Lexer's movement I would argue helped him a lot vs cha0ticz during him comeback. Don't say it's easy to pull of either due to it being linear else everyone would of been doing it.

Routine vs any semi-good player who knows what he is doing will get you wasted, so I don't think you could of been too good at all really. I tend to play one person over and over and the only reason I win over him so much is because he uses routine and never varies, I can give myself an advantage in situation where I shouldn't have just because I know what he's going to do, as soon as I play someone else I ain't got the slightest clue. If you honestly think it's down to routine, people will be getting crazy skilled from just watching demos.

The aim based thing keeps coming up, does it help a lot? Yeah it does but it WILL only get you so far. In fact if you knew anything about Q3 post 1950's you would already know this. You need good aim yes but what's the point if the other person is never near you in a position where you can use it? Go watch some demos of the Belorussian guy Cherya (I think it was him) he hits a lot of rails and hits them constantly. Never gets him far though. What you have to understand is, no matter the game, aim will always get stronger and stronger as the games develop over time. As usual I will point out the mega obvious; cooller. He didn't have shit aim granted, but quite frankly toxic/czm/z4muz/jibo and many others pretty much shit over him as far as that was concerned.

I can't talk about QW really since it bores me (not everyone likes air control) and I only watch demos but that RL knock back, that would be much more frustrating in VQ3 :)

A better play could write this a lot better, but I think it still pretty much stands true.

if you watch a high level q3 match, players take very little risks - hardly any rj's etc, in qw you will see the top players doing tens of rj's and funky in-fight moves every game

the difference between a top player's movement in qw, and an average one is huge, where as in q3 it is just a subtle (and only sometimes decisive) difference

In q3 aim is everything particularly low sens hitscan tracking aim. On lan, an in-form cooller more than holds his own vs all those players you mention in that department.

'Armor routine' not in the sense of having a pre-fixed routine you run every time you play a certain level but more in the way of trying to line up items and run them. P.S With the long switch delays of Q3/4, you actually see less combos, I'm sorry to tell you. You do see them in the later Quakes, but hardly as much as QW.

nah weapon combos are more difficult in Q4 because switch time is even slower. But Q3 OSP switch was perfect imo. Not too fast, not too slow. And then you have Q3 CPMA with extremely fast switch. In Q3, we had the RL -> RG combination which gave us some amazing frags. It's just a fact that RL, RG and shaft complimented each other really well in Q3 and made for some interesting combos. QW airrockets are nice, but you have airrockets in Q3 too. QW just didn't have the same diversity, sorry to say this.

Difference is in q3 you can ALWAYS have enough rail slugs, in qw you can't use the lg nonstop because you run out of cells VERY quickly and there isn't a huge stash on every map.

Ive played both games to a high level and both are very very different. I think if people try to actually play some QW they'll appreciate it so much more, golf looks shit to me but I've never tried it so I can't talk.

It's probably worth noting that qw 1v1 is somewhat broken. The evolution of the game has necessitated that duels be played with dmm3 (weapon stay for non qw players). This totally negates weapon control which was a key element in earlier q1 dueling.

Yeah it sucks. DMM1 was replaced by DMM3 in 1on1/2on2, because 30 seconds was too long. But DMM3 isn't the best solution either.

Instant hit.

Projectile.

That's it. QW has both of the main flavors of those (RL, LG), and then some (GL, Quad SSG, Quad SNG, SSG, SNG, boomstick (mostly in TDM)) The only thing it is missing is an RG, and I've seen way too many RG rapes to know that if you are going to talk about "unbalanced", Q3 railgun takes the cake away from QW lg or rl

That's not the first demo I've watched (I don't claim that I've watched alot, but I watched a few games), and that's not the first demo where I think that this game is dominated by two blatantly overpowered weapons. I also played a few games of qw, I'm sure that was by far not enough to even understand anything of the game. But the experience right from the start is that you just completely rely on the rocketlauncher and use shaft whenever you are able to pick it up. And so far pretty much every single qw game I've watched proves that, again and again.

And please don't forget that you can't dumb down weapons to instant hit and projectile. You can't compare LG and Rail or SG, you can't compare RL and Plasmagun or GL. They're so much different from each other that the whole 'instant hit' and 'projectile' respectively is the only thing they got in common. What however seems to be the huge difference between say QW and Q3 is that in Q3 you got a focus on RL, Rail and LG but can do alot of damage or sometimes even more damage with most of the other guns. The only weapon switching I ever see in QW is from RL to LG and vice versa.

Maybe you could take some care to explain why it is actually beneficial to have a "balanced" game (e.g. to play soccer with 22 balls instead of 1)? I would really like to benefit from your wisdom.

Imo more balanced weapons add to the gameplay as you can and should master more than 2 weapons. You might say that then you don't really have to control weapons as everyone can kill you with every weapon anyway, but that's just not true. You'll never win a Q3 duel with SG, PG and GL, and as you can see in the better Q3 duel demos, people are controlling weapons, too (dm6 rail rocket shaft, t4 rail rocket, ...). For me it just looks dull in QW, you either use RL or LG, and that's it. Surely in Q3 people are focusing on RL, LG and RG, but they're constantly switching between more weapons and also do some damage with other weapons than the three I mentioned.

Balanced guns, for example, to me mean that there are no weak and no strong guns. Well what the fuck is that? Basically that means you can't have Shaq on your team now. Sports/games were never about "balance". The only balance you should be concerned about is if the rules are the *same* for every player.

Competition is about exploiting and unbalancing the game against your opponent. Making it more balanced is exactly what dumbs it down.

You say games should be exploited and that's what competitive gaming is about, fair environment for everyone and then exploiting. What's your problem with the RG in Q3 then? Everyone has access to it, it works the same for everyone, and damn it gets exploited.
QW has RL and LG, and I rarely see anyone else using another weapon. Q3 has RL, LG and RG as major weapons, but except say SG and maybe MG (for duel) you're using all weapons constantly, you focus on RL LG and RG but you still use all weapons constantly. Again they're more balanced, but they're by far not equal.

And if you can't keep track of the handful of weapons in Q3 as a spectator, you're prolly not worth your seat on an empty 2000 slots GTV server.

VQ3 is my favourite multiplayer FPS next to QW. I think it is more balanced than QW (as a noob you'll most likely lose every DM4 game by X-0 where X>50). What most Q3 players probably wont like about QW is that in a QW game neither perfect aim nor considered switching between many weapons are necessary to outplay an opponent. Then what good things does QW have to offer, you ask? Well, besides the fact that some people actually like the above mentioned, simple "weapon system" QW also has physics that can be extremely fun, a great armor system, an RL some people consider the best RL to ever appear in an FPS, and much, much more.

Dont know if you really can compare the aims in different games but you might find the movie above enlightening. It's not a frag highlight movie but a demo converted to .avi. Not sure but i think the match was played in 2002. To those who actually bother to watch: end.bsp is not a "real" map its just for warmup&fun.

Paradoks displays incredible mouse control. Incredible mouse control is a skill that many gamers probably don't realise they can have or should want. Yet all it takes is a bit of understanding of the mechanics of it all.

The mouse is an extension of his hand and his hand is wired directly into his brain so the mouse is actually wired into his brain as well. He doesn't think when he aims or moves he simply acts and his actions often have incredible precision (thanks to the incredible mouse control) and in a game like QW such precision results in spectacular bursts of highly skilled gameplay.

One of the factors is that the pushback factor in QW lg is higher than other comparable games (such as rofl Q3 Q4 or PK). So, you are able to push your opponent back and then "strafe into" their movement, generating better shaft.

It's hard to explain, but there are many LG techniques developed by QW players that players in other games with LG never got around to because the weapon is simply weaker and its not worth it.

That said, some of the few PK I watched, was Fat vs Vo0 on the world tour finals, and I must say they both displayed some accurate LG there. In Q3 also, I've seen people such as Cooller simply devastate on the orders of magnitude of QW.

Is Pietro in this event?

Pietro really was a great player at his peak probably ahead of his time. He used to beat up an exuberant dag which was entertaining to watch time and again. :)

Haven't seen him playing for quite some time though. He did come back a couple of years ago for a short time but the game had changed significantly from when he was at his peak and it looked like he wasn't able to be the player he once was.

Ahh gotcha. :D I loved watching his demos, his movement and mouse was crazy smooth.

Nah, there is something poetic about one on one. Even in the animal kingdom. Imagine two alpha moose battling for supremecy on a plain field surrounded by lush forests. The sheer beauty of two mammals colliding! The thunderous clash of antlers! Now imagine if the friends of these moose suddenly decided to join in. And the friends of friends. It would be a mess. It would be wrong. It would be against nature.

That wouldn't work as the whole CS & Battlefield-style of gameplay isn't manly enough for the manly men who play Quake. :(

different games...i mean, its like compare apples with oranges... its subjective... some people likes run arround a map shootting everywhere with a little beat of strategy, and some people likes more strategy in the game and less running quicker on a map. I preffer QW but i respect Q3. I still playing the 2 games.

No but he's one of the top players.

I think the real point the qw players are trying to get at is.....QW is a hell of a lot more fun than Q3. Having played a heck of a lot of QW and a heck of a lot of Q3, 1vs1s, 4vs4s, ffas are all a heck of a lot more fun in QW. Everything feels just about right, and the game is still evolving. Take a peak at the Frag3 demos in Q3, and at one of the later Cooller ones and you'll see that neither the style, nor the tactics of the players changed from the test to the end of the game (camp armours, wait for opponent to get bored and take a risk). Q3 became too much about timing, which took a lot of the flare out of it.

I love Q3 because I like the rail. I like sneaking around corners and sending out long distance rails. But it's so bloody boring being on the recieving end of it. I both love to bounce, and be bounced around by QW RL.

And I love watching some of the QW ownage demos. I fall asleep after the 10th frag in a q3 ownage demo.

CPMA WAS THE IDEA OF QW PLAYERS TO TAKE ALL THE GOOD STUFF FROM QW AND PUT IT INTO Q3.

AND THEY WERE ABLE TO MAKE SOMETHING BETTER OUT OF IT. :P

Clearly though, anyone that has truely fallen in love with Q3 will not be able to say that QW > Q3, and vice versa. For me CPMA > * but i like to take a lot of risks and play less routine for a more fun game. On good days it works without getting me killed. ;)

What's the point of showing us the lame demo? bent's aim is just bad, he don't know what strategy is, he forgots to take health/armor. bent is able to move smoothly, but that's all. Very boring demo.
