different mouse from a different brand. ninox auroras are very prone to bugging out and/or completely bricking due to the software, seemingly randomly. especially sucks when a previous user set the dpi and removed the other levels without it bricking then when you try to fix it it dies. no mouse has the same shape so if you like the shape you're stuck to either finding a not messed up aurora, or there are a couple oem brands that used the same shell, but the internals suck by default on those. maybe i'll just mod one with a different pcb at some point

Is this a problem with certain batch of Auroras? Or perhaps using it with the software running in the background so it wears out the flash? Mine was programmed once and refuses to die after what, 7 years? [1] My friend has two working for 4+ years.

So you're saying even if those Auroras keep soldiering on, they will all die the second someone installs the original software?

What about a brand new spare I have in the closet? Will that die the second I get it out of the box and try to set the speed?

I'm in the same boat as you, I can't use anything that has a fat end, aka anything available on the market. Chinese Diamondback-shaped cheap mice still exist, but they're unusable for gaming. Everyone making light mice simply copies Zowie aka WMO shape, aka fat bottom I can't use. Which is why I have spare Auroras! And now you're scaring me that they will all die!

[1] Needed a contact cleaner spray into the microswitches several times, of course. Rubber coating mostly flaked off, trying to remove the rest of it scratched through the paint so I stopped, it looks really tired. Chinese universal PTFE feet (pack of a 100 for dollar or something, WMO size I think) get glued on top of the original plastic ones, as trying to cut something this small with scissors doesn't look better anyways. Looks awful, works like a champ. BeaSTly mouse.

If you're that interested in Ninox Auroras, I'm surprised you don't know about the 2 major issues with this mouse. First is the software/firmware issue, where any change made and applied to the onboard settings had a high chance to brick the mouse. It is likely to happen to you, but it might not be at the first or second attempt. Hard to say when, but it happens a lot so won't take much to find out. If you made the change once successfully, and then left it as it is, then you fluked and did the right thing.

The second issue is the m1+m2 click latency. When you press left click (mouse1) and then press right click (mouse2), or the other way round, there is a firmware flaw forcing a 50-55ms delay. An example of another mouse that has a high m1+m2 delay is Razer Abyssus, and that was still at 20-25ms. These figures seem very small, but if you've used the Aurora long enough it will result in you having trouble when you have to perform an action that requires both main clicks to be pressed together or in rapid succession. Examples from FPS games:

- rocket jumping
- quick scoping
- moving in and out of ADS aim while shooting

Ofcourse, you will only notice it if you 1) perform those actions often and 2) use mouse1 & mouse2 for those actions.

Apart from these 2 major deal breakers, the Aurora is a solid mouse. Great tracking, great shape.

Yeah, I have an allergy to mouse drivers. I stopped using Razer after they made their mice so cheap they couldn't even remember button assignments, while at the same time Roccat was making mice which needed no drivers at all (all settings you can change with button combos). Don't get me started with later Razer always-online crap.

Then there's Linux and LANs, but more importantly, I can't install anything on a locked down work computer (I obviously need a good mouse and keyboard for work, so they need to just work).

So I developed an allergy and stand firmly behind my position that a computer mouse is not allowed to require a driver to function.

So I installed Ninox drivers once on a Windows partition of a laptop I never used, programmed my colors and cpis and that's it. Single flash programming for the whole life of the mouse. It should survive a few more flashes, considering it never saw that software again, so there was nothing to wear it out.

Also, these things happen everywhere nowadays... At work we've had a bunch of servers with these problems (HP Gen8) - if you haven't installed a firmware update fast enough (and of course we only started doing that after first two failures, at which point the rest were just ticking time bombs ;)), it wore out its embedded flash, and the solution is of course swapping the motherboard :) So can you blame bst's ODM for making the same error? :)

I have jump on space, so never even noticed the button clash while rocket jumping (but I can see how that would be a deal breaker for RMB jumpers!) I play Quake, so there's no benefit for "quick scoping", but I know what you mean with ADS, QC has HMG with different mode of fire when zooming. I don't use it all that much, or switch while already spraying, so again - never even noticed this problem! Are you sure it's there? I need to run tests! :)

No way, I'm keeping my Auroras :) I actually have 3 of them still:
- a used one where the wheel stopped registering clicks and the mouse feet completely wore out, so I just took a spare (before ordering contact cleaner and different feet to try)
- this one which looks like a dog ate it but still rocking (or maybe this one was the original one and I used the other one for a few months? Can't remember ;))
- and one brand new in box! Not for sale! Maybe one day it will be worth 6 figures? :)

I had 2 (gave the first one away but regretted it and bought a second one :D) and neither of them died due to the software bug. Though I only ever ran the software to apply my settings on them once then deleted it.

My memories are fuzzy but if I remember correctly this russian roulette with the software never got fixed.

To answer your question, it doesn't matter if the mouse is brand new or not, making any changes in the software has a chance to either brick the mouse or ruin the tracking, capping its acceleration (people say the tracking speed gets capped but i'm pretty sure it's the acceleration that breaks, as it seems to go into negative accel rather than spinning out). pressing the reset button in the software seems to basically have a 100% chance of just bricking the mouse completely dead.

I agree with you, every symmetrical mouse rn is just a lazy clone, and there is nothing as small as the aurora without flaring out at the back and with flat sides (all the other "egg" shaped mice, without flares, seem to have curved sides for some reason)

I'd only sell my spare if there was anything to replace it on the market :(

I'm skeptical about the buttons though. My ideal mouse would be shorter, but have wider buttons.

I have a normal size hand, normal resting/grabbing stuff position is 10 cm between thumb and pinky, Aurora and that Logitech are 6 cm wide, which is fine for two finger control without moving the wrist. However, this Logitech has buttons thinner towards the front, so the three fingers (which take 5 cm themselves) would be super cramped, or at least it looks that way.

Plus it's sooo heavy for such a small mouse, I don't want to dremel a $100 mouse :/

(Actually I could do that to the O-, cut off the butt and be done with it, it has holes anyways, right?!)

apparently the mcu isn't usb flashable. could wire up a flash circuit using some veroboard and re-flash the firmware but that would require BST to be alive enough to send firmware or something, or someone to make their own. sucks :/
