I might end up using 120hz because of light boost from what I can tell you need to use 120hz to use light boost. It seems to make it easier to focus on moving images.

I've been messing around with it for about a month on my new XL2720T @ 120hz 1ms and I have to say the overall feeling and performance is the exact same of a crt, only that I can set my resolutions up to 1080p (which I don't lol).
also the whole brightness deal had a reverse effect on me, stuff looks better than without lightboost IMO, the colors seem just more right in comparison. so basically I'd say lightboost beats the shit out of no lightboost. and whose words are you going to trust, nobo jiggly's or the ones from a 7-time world champion? I have an Asus VG248QE and use lightboost 24/7.
I thought I was getting old because I would get eye strain after playing for more than about an hour. Lightboost solved this problem for me. I grew up with CRTs and only ditched mine in 2009 for the 2233rz. LCD sample and hold blur IS a problem for me, even at the 7ms that 144hz monitors offer.

144hz is definitely smoother and maybe slightly more responsive (hard to isolate that placebo factor) but still too blurry. Personally I will take 4-7ms of input lag to keep fast moving objects crisp. This is actually a huge deal if you play games like QW/CPM where you need to keep waving your view around to bunnyhop but still want clear vision.

I recently got a XL2420T and tried out Lightboost after a couple of weeks getting used to playing at 120hz. I noticed sometimes I'd get a headache playing without Lightboost. Ever since I started using it they seemed to have stopped. I'm guessing the blur was the reason, but I've never had a problem with other panels.
I usually toggle it off when I'm not playing something, but it's really useful when playing CPM and other stuff. I personally think the lack of motion blur far outweighs the supposed frame or so of input lag.

You need to elaborate more when you say that Lightboost doesn't give you headaches.

I can get headaches with a same setup today, even though I've never had any because of it.

And there are numerous things that can cause headaches, it is a bit like you're saying:

"Whatever you do, for the same situation X, when you try setup B and setup C, C is better in this situation X."

I said that I experienced headaches playing Quake at 120hz without Lightboost, and when I switched to using Lightboost I stopped getting headaches. I was stating the experience I had after a few weeks of trying both. I never said one setting or another guarantees anything...

Well I'm pretty sure that the vg236he had nearly 15ms of input latency to begin with. So adding any additional latency would be pretty noticeable. Says more about the screen than lightboost.

Can anyone explain me a bit about connections? I'm thinking about three cases:

1.- In a desktop setup it's only one DVI right?

2.- What is dual DVI for, besides 3d?

3.- How they do it at DH, with laptops connected to a 120hz screen. Do those laptops have DVI or just do so via HDMI?

2. I don't know, all I know, from what I usually read is that DVI-D is faster, has higher brandwidth etc than D-SUB and HDMI 1.0 to 1.4a (? not sure about the HDMI versions though).

3. mini DP most of the times to DP or DVI-D. HDMI doesn't work for now (theorically people say that it should work now but it doesn't, some friends tried and told me it doesn't).

Edit 2: the problem with HDMI is that apparently the versions need to be the right one on the monitor and the laptop/desktop, and if you look at the 120/144hz monitors apparently many people said it's still not the last HDMI version lol. But they will fix that with HDMI 2.0 normally, but yeah that's gonna take a long time I bet -.-.

Edit 3: :D if you want to plug a laptop to a 120/144hz monitor like me then be careful check which ports your monitor has. Like the previous version of some Benq didn't have DP ports. So you need to get the right cable.

For desktops manyyyyy models have the necessary ports! I think you'll be reallly unlucky if you find a card without these ports now, but it's written on the specs when you purchase one anyway.

About laptops, always make sure they have a mini display port, even some gaming laptops like the Gigabyte models sometimes don't have the necessary ports (even though there is a high end graphic card inside! It sucks).

Oh and yes it's totally safe. The only annoying part is HDMI is you're one of these persons who want one port for video and audio, then you need to wait until the HDMI 2.0 is finally the new standard!

There is an interesting reason behind why movies are at this framerate. The reason is that they are not supposed to represent real life. Movies are fantasy... fiction. I think everything else should be at least 60 FPS.

People who watch movies on these 200hz TVs sometimes say that it doesn't look "real" anymore (I guess because it's smooth). I've seen some people looking for screens that can work exactly at 24hz if I remember correctly so that they can enjoy movies shot at 24 fps perfectly :D haha.

They're at 24fps because that was state of the art technology in 1920. No reason movies can't be 40 or 125hz. It changes the filming slightly but it's not like people complain about theater actors looking too realistic or unemotional or something.

I think the higher fps just exposes the fact that some people suck at acting, and it's more noticeable with higher framerate. Same as how some actors look worse in HD but Halle Berry is $.

Maybe it would be way easy to see how fake special effects are at a decent framerate :D

I've just bought 120/144 Hz monitor and happy about that, but can't correctly configure it for ql. Yes, everything is much smoother, but I doesn't feel my sens and can't find it back. Also map colors came so bright but it's ok.
I only changed r_displayrefresh from 60 to 120.

I just got this monitor as well. Do not use lightboost, use the "Blur Reduction" feature. I haven't actually played with it at all because the motion blur is pretty negligible. The colors with lightboost get too dim for me to care to compensate.

Mate, it's not mentally, it's really totally different mouse feel. Any adjustings doesn't helo, I feel like some mouse delay, dunno how to explain it.

Lightboost and the blur reduction feature on benq monitors add a small amount of input lag. A lot of people choose not to use it because of this. That is why your mouse feels delayed. If you like the reduced motion blur you can try to get use to it.

I don't use blur reduction but I don't know where to turn lightboost off to prevent that input lag.

you dont have to turn it off if you did not istall it in first place. It requires third party program to setup monitor, most common is ToastyX so if you did not install it you do not have to remove anything.

Yeah I didn't read properly. I am posting from my phone. If you were using 60hz before aiming is going to be weird for a while using 120hz or 144hz. I have a couple questions and suggestions. What mouse are you using? You should try com_maxfps 126 201 or 250. Also you should try com_idlesleep 0. If you still feel like you there is input delay it is more than likely in your head because you are not use to using high hz. I had trouble aiming for about a month or more after getting a 144hz moniter coming from 75hz lcd. Before the lcd I used a crt at 85hz because I had no idea it could do about 130hz at 800x600.

Well I thought it would be worth asking because something is very wrong if he can only set quake live to 60 and 120hz Because I have A lot more options and I can't even use some of them so the options are not dependent on your monitor so I don't think this guy has a clue what he is doing so I was starting with the basics. check r_displayrefresh in game, if it's not been able to set the value you want it will have reverted to 0 or not been able to start the client properly at all, if it's any other value then it's a cfg problem.

Also did you put r_displayrefresh in a CFG or just type it in the console, you need to vid_restart if already in game.

i've set display refresh at 144hz on Quake Live menu in game, then i checked on console if the cvar r_displayrefresh was 144, and it was.


On gpu settings its 144, on QL console its 144, the only one that is wrong is on OSD menu of the monitor.

The benq should be fine. The only thing is I would not recommend using the blur reduction because it adds input lag. It may be nice for watching demos or spectating matches but do to the input lag it isn't great for actually playing. Also if at all possible you should consider keeping your crt they are good for quake live and counter-strike.

I just ordered an XL2411Z today to ditch my CRT. From what I understand, the XL2411Z uses the same panel as the XL2420Z and the ASUS VG248QE, which is an updated version of the XL2411T panel. The XL2420Z has DisplayPort and some knick-knacks and switches, XL2411Z does not.

I guess you want version 2 of the XL2411Z firmware or you will have problems. I'm not sure how to make sure you get it, hopefully you can't get version 1 anymore?
