Does ping have a huge impact on gameplay like it does in Quake Live, or will I be able to play with Europeans with relative ease?

If you're on the east coast then i think it will be bearable. There have been quite some improvements when it comes to the netcode the last few years, so give it a shot.

Hmmm, well hopefully I will be heading to college in the East. West Coast right now, so I guess it would be pretty unbearable. ;)

The tourney will be monthly, not just once. So pick up your RL and start practising until you move to East coast :)

Well, My skills haven't changed much the past ... 11+ years
The game changed and you adapt, change gamestyle, go with the flow or be creative and change the way of the game yourself.
Also it took a lot longer to get good in 1996, than it does today. Information is overwhelming, community is really helpful and it's just a totally different game.
Basic skills .. .like raw infight/movement/aim stuff, doesn't that long to learn. Especially if you have previous FPS experience from say, qlive or something similar.

And if you have the expectation from the get go "when I join a new game i wanna be part of elite from day 1, because I feel i have earned that through my hard work in the game I'm currently playing" you got it all wrong.

The glass is not half empty, try to enjoy all aspects of the game, interact with community and let yourself evolve and progress.

That is actually something I have been thinking about but you put it perfectly. I was thinking about it because I was watching some demos from 2002-2003 and was really surprised how similar the aim and even the movement of some of the guys from back then was, to what it is now!
