claw i get (angry eagle holding mouse), palm is the "normal" grip of your average computer users, but fingertip i dont have a clear vision of.

There is some disagreement on which one is which. Claw grip should be the actual "claw" shape you make from only having the very tips of your fingers touching the mouse. This style is best for very high sens play, and controls the mouse almost purely with the fingers. "Fingertip" (or "grip") still has the palm elevated above the mouse, with only your fingers touching the mouse. Movement is primarily controlled by the wrist, and it's good for medium to high sensitivity. Palm is, of course, resting on the mouse, and controlling the mouse almost purely through the arm. This is generally best for low sensitivity.

Well, accuracies means really nothing due to spam, you can have +30 lg in every battle, but accuracy will show only 25 because of spam. Most good players spam a lot (Cooller, avek, cypher), others don't spam almost at all (k1llsen, strenx). Same goes with RG.

Nice effort and some good info, next I think you should have a go at writing a guide that focuses more on the actual techniques and thought processes used in-game while aiming. It surprises me I've never seen (maybe there are some?) aiming guides before that focus on actual technique, after all as a kid I spent thousands upon thousands of hours in different sports purely being taught and training my technique.

I kind of feel the majority of players in quake and other FPS think they will eventually improve to their best just playing game after game, yet in the real world there is no sport that would ever take this approach to improvement.

What is a beginner in terms of aim? Someone who can't hit (without spamming too much) at least 30% shaft and 50% rail with consistency against players of his skill level or below. A very good aimer will hit 35/55, and world class aimers will be able to hit 45/65 quite often.

Your whole "guide" seems to be about lg/rg only. What about rl/plasma? I guess you don't need aim for that. At least in tdm/ctf :P

this guide was about rg/lg only because of what nargle believes is "raw aim".

aim is 90% positioning and movement except for the hitscan weapons in certain situations (because sometimes they simply can not be evaded), but even with those, setting up properly is more important than anything else, most of the time. if you play a game where you rely on "raw aim" a lot, you're doing it wrong, no matter the gametype.

that's also why his percentages seem to make no sense, a better way to do this (if you have to) would be to say hitting x percentage in a "perfect" situation, perfect as in: right distance to use said weapon, no obstructions aka. a shot you have to hit.
with those, good aim would probably mean 40% lg/ 60% rg with great aimers hitting 50/80 and above.

i also disagree on the part on grip styles. in no way does wrist aim mean your mouse should be at the edge of the pad or table.
you can play like that, but you lose the extra arm movement you could use when playing in the mid and just pivoting on your wrist joint. that's also what the players he mentioned are actually doing iirc.

I disagree. Imo (offensive) rockets require raw aim, too. Everyone can basicly hit +back rockets but there aren't many who can shred with rockets. I'm always puzzled when I see cyher doing it. The way he rapes people with rockets is just :o and I think it's rather raw aim than movement and positioning ;).Setting up a fight is very important tho especially in duel but imo raw aim allows you to fight in worse positions and gives you overall an edge over your opponent because you'll get unpredictable.

I'm not against guides and he gave some insightful hints but I just don't like it when someone says "most people" without any actual proof :O. Especially when some great high sens players put almost their whole lower arm on the table (stermy, cypher etc.). It would have been better if he had written about pros and cons about different arm positions, accel/no accel etc.

its the same with aim.... you are born with certain hand eye coordination*, and you wont get past ur limits... you can however became master of positioning to help your aim...


*- you actually can improve ur hand eye coordination, but only when u start it at very young age... thats why there are so many decent aimers among young players... they play games since they were 6, so they improved their aiming skills... but it was done during long years of playing many hours a day, something normal adult cant do

I wear glasses too and I can barely see distances, imo the only reason I was able to do that was not luck it was that I mentally prepared myself and visualized how it would react when I shot it and how my arm should react so I made a up a technique in my head and used it and it worked same goes for aiming in quake I have a visual feel in my head for mouse movement when I see pov moving even in frag movies where I sort of get a sense that the mouse is moving in my head and that feeling double after I taught myself to switch between inverted mouse and back.
also to make my point my handeye coordination is not that good it's decent but not amazing and I can aim just fine.

mix of boredom + high ping so I wasn't really that bothered about playing people so I taught myself inverted in 1 week and 5 days , one week later I messed it back up be switching back and retaught myself un-inverted in in 2 days and the I tried inverted agains 1 day later and the switch seemed like it took nothing.

Nah, afaik there's no kind of training that can compensate for the natural process which is biologically determined. Note that I emphasized that the performance difference despite training difference occurs in a special artificial task. But we're getting off-topic here. ;)

You still have to prove that hand eye coordination is determined by genetics, not by deliberate practice.

You haven't proposed a valid way of measuring 'raw aim', you haven't measured the hand-eye-coordination of the players you are comparing and you know nothing about genetics.
These aren't the perfect conditions to claim you know anything about how these 3 things relate to each other.

Other than that. You are either all aim, or all brain. Or, obviously something in between. If you have both, you are a lucky sob. However, it is easier and more encouraging to improve your strengths rather than your weaknesses.

If you cannot aim with shaft, find ways to not use shaft i.e. force rocket or rail fights. There is always a way around it.

If you play TDM you are bound to be good with all weapons. Eventually, that is. I think I can speak from my point of view that TDM has helped me tremeondously to excel at duel. Not that I am that good but considering that I have only played 1.5k duels in my life, I think I am pretty good already.

But since competition in team modes is rather lacking, you might be stuck with duel where improving one's aim can be a tedious process when someone is plus backing on ztn for 6 minutes.
