CA back in HoQ leagues? It may be. We need your input. (53 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 10:47 CDT, 3 November 2017 - iMsg
Hey,

After the revival of 2v2 TDM, CA might come back to House of Quake as well.
I know it's not Quake and stuff ), but every competitive activity just makes things better for QL and for us, so I definitely support the incentive to reinstate the game mode into the league.

Here're two polls about the issue. The first one is trying to get a rough idea on how many people would be interested in playing:

http://www.strawpoll.me/14318054

The second one is about which format the community would prefer if CA will indeed make a comeback to the league:

http://www.strawpoll.me/14317915

Never tried to make a poll before, hope it works right.

C'mon bruvanskis, let's try to give QL a new life together.

Quake pros & displays - the list (54 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 15:11 CDT, 20 October 2016 - iMsg
Hey,

I thought I collect some intel on what monitors the Quake pros and more known high skillers use, just like I did with mice and pads. Might be interesting to see what others staring at, no?

Two things beforehand; I'm not 100% sure that it's all correct, so enlighten us about the golden potat gear if you notice that something's wrong in the list and if you have knowledge on other good players' setup, feel free to tell us about it.

'Cheap' 144Hz LCD for Kvek - but which? (43 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 14:14 CDT, 4 October 2016 - iMsg
Yo bruvz.

Old shit, 52342 threads tell tales about it, now it's my version on the plate, yuhuhu.

So, planning on getting a 144Hz LCD, because whatever. CRT staying as well.
2 candidates here, there are personal reasons for these two.

1. AOC G2460PF

2. LG 24GM77-B

Both has 3 year warranty. AOC is cheaper and supports FreeSync. Well, I'm mostly nVidia now, but this might come in handy later on.

Roughly the same specs.
Do any of you have experience with AOC?
Do the LG worth +25$?

May the potat harosh in you.

DDoS over (?) and still can't connect (62 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 08:51 CST, 30 January 2015 - iMsg
Hey,

After the DDoS attack, I can't connect to Quake Live, while some of my friends can.

I run the client. It starts loading, then after a while, the following error message pops up:

"We're sorry, but it appears you are having problems connecting to the QUAKE LIVE network. If you are behind a firewall you must make sure that it permits the following connection:

Protocol: TCP
Host: xmpp.quakelive.com
Port: 5222

Contact your network administrator for further instructions, or Click Here to look for help."

Edit: Can't ping xmpp.quakelive.com either. Request timed out.

I have no router, no firewall, no autologin, already did a flushdns and restarted the modem and the PC several times with no effect.

Do any of you have an idea how to make it work?

Also harosh, potat, cooller, WMO.

Edit 2: There were hiccups and some warpers, but I was able to play a few games this night. I wonder how it will be in the upcoming afternoon.

Disgusting bug since Steam-launch (23 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 08:30 CDT, 4 October 2014 - iMsg
Hey,

Do any of you encountered the following DISGUSTING problem?

You are playing, everything is ponies and rainbows and suddenly, every bind except WASD turns off. It won't register jump (space), any weapon binds and left click (only right click). Sometimes, after you re-execing your autoexec and do a vid_restart, it's good again, but most of the time it's not.
Sometimes, it still persists after QL client restart.

I'm pretty sure it's not related to the keyboard (PS/2) and mouse (MX300, and it happened with 3 different mice already) or cfg. Only happens since Steam-launch.

Now can't add to a pickup, because there's a high possibility that this shit occurs in the middle of a game.. I won't even mention that there's at least 50 games missing from match history..

What the actual fuck is this?

Hey,

I'm interested in this keyboard, but before purchase, I'd like to get some input from quakers who are using this.

So is it possible to strafejump flawlessly in every direction with WASD+SPACE (also CTRL for +movedown, C - rl, F - lg) with this one?

Kana v2/Kinzu frankenmouse;can you help? (12 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 06:02 CDT, 23 May 2014 - iMsg
Hey,

I was wondering if the Kana v2 PCB would fit in (without the need of modification) into a Kinzu v1 or Kinzu v2 shell.

Thing is, Kana v2 has a really nice sensor (high LOD tho, but that can be fixed with a little tape), but it's weight is a real pain on my RSI wrist.
My Kinzu v1 is FW-dead, the Kinzu v2 works fine, however the sensor is a piece of crap. This is why I thought about making a Kana v2 - Kinzu frankenmouse.

Do any of you have legit information on this issue? I mean putting Kana v2 PCB into Kinzu shell without the need of carve anything and using only a screwdriver.

Thanks for any help.

Scoreboard toggle script. (18 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 06:37 CDT, 15 March 2014 - iMsg
Hey,

I made a little toggle script for the scoreboard, after the pattern of the accuracy toggle-script.

WAS WERY-WERY HARD ))

But anyways, you don't have to spend 3 minutes to do it, if you feel, that sometimes holding down your +scores bind to have a good look on scoreboard is annoying and you'd rather have it on toggle.

bind TAB "vstr SCOREtoggle"
seta SCOREtoggle "vstr scoreon"
seta scoreoff "-scores;set scoretoggle vstr scoreon"
seta scoreon "+scores;set scoretoggle vstr scoreoff"

CRT - Which one from these two? (18 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 04:22 CST, 25 February 2014 - iMsg
Hey,

I'd like to buy a CRT, preferably in size of 17 inches.

The main point is, that it must be a Flatron which can do 120 Hz in 640 x 480 / 800 x 600, that's all.
Size is good for me, works out perfectly. Bigger screen make my focus point wander more during Quake sessions.

It would be preferable if the picture quality would be nice.
The stuff being reliable is also important - I don't wanna buy a monitor for a few years.

I have these two, which I can get relatively easy. Prices are irrelevant (3,5-8 EUR), which is partly a reason as well.

So

1. 17" SONY Multiscan G220
2. 17" Samsung SyncMaster 795MB

The question is; which one should I choose and why?

QL Standalone error - WTF? Help needed. (20 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 10:55 CST, 21 January 2014 - iMsg
Yo,

After 3 months of absence, I was able to come back to play again. But for what reason? As I saw, no Prism anymore (...), just some QL Standalone dipshit. Thank God. Now, I cannot even start playing because this window pops up from the depths of the abyss after a long "search for game content";

Maybe this issue was covered somewhere already, but what is this? How can I make it work? Some help would be appriciated.

I use a pretty old machine (Celeron 1.8, 512 MB, Radeon X200) with Windows XP SP2.

MX300 @ 500Hz under Win7 not working : / (46 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 09:37 CDT, 26 August 2013 - iMsg
Hey,

Managed to get an MX300 in decent condition, but the polling rate hack won't work.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 (build 7601).

I tried this

http://www.ngohq.com/news/15043-how-to-increa...a-7-a.html

followed the steps by the letter, and still won't work, only 125 Hz.

UAC is ofc off, test mode works fine

hidusbf setup tells me it's an USB input device - HID-compliant mouse. Didn't use "Install service" or "restart", registered the drivers via dseo13b.exe, restarted the computer and the thing just won't work - I tried multiple times.

Does anybody have an idea what to do to make it 500 Hz under Win7 x64?

New map: Fuse (7 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 14:18 CDT, 24 July 2013 - iMsg
Hey,

I was getting the thought that some premature discussion about the map would be nice already as I didn't find a thread about specifically this topic. More so "techincal" issues, rather than metagame stuff.

Overall, it looks fun, more so than I first thought, but in my opinion, it needs a little bit of fps-tweaking, especially in the center area, where MH resides. I have fps-drops mainly there, but other CPU-killing areas are present as well - for example around upper-RA.

----
EDIT: Experimented around with the *.cfg and looks like using r_vertexLight 1 with r_enablePostProcess 0 solves this problem, but I still think that there's a need for a bit of optimalization; not every player uses these settings.
----

Another annoying hindrance is the tiny little corners on the walls (for example under MH) where you can easily stuck, while trying to dodge or hide behind wall itself.

Discuss. Or not.

Quake Live on laptop - which one to buy? (75 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 12:47 CDT, 5 May 2013 - iMsg
Hey,

I'm thinking about selling my desktop PC and invest into a laptop.

Sadly, my financial background is not too bright, on the contrary, it's quite limited, so I'm looking for something around 400-450 dollars.

My gaming is almost only QL, so it's an absolute necessity to run the game stable 125 fps on any map with 8-16 players, under Win7 x64.

I prefer stability and reliability over performance, so I'm mainly into Lenovo, Toshiba and Fujitsu models.

What I found so far is something like this;

1)
Lenovo IdeaPad G585
AMD E Series E1-1200 @ 1.4 GHz, dual core
8GB DDR3 1066MHz
ATI Radeon HD6370 1 GB

QL is more CPU-demanding, than VGA-dependent, so the CPU concerns me a bit.

2)
Fujitsu Lifebook A512
Intel® Pentium Dual Core™ B960
4GB DDR3
Intel® HD Graphics 2000

The CPU is much better, but this time, that Intel HD 2000 is the source of unsureness. : /

Besides QL, only flawless 1080p Blu-ray playback is a must, but this is something that I shouldn't be too concerned about; both AMD APUs and Intel HDs are fine with that. But QL is another story.

Edit: Meanwhile, I looked a bit further and found 2 other machines, but these are used.

3) Acer 9920
C2 T7500 2.2 GHz
2GB DDR2 800 (+1 free slot)
GeForce 8600M GT 512MB
160GB HDD (+1 free slot)
LiteOn DS8A1P DVD W/RW DL
20" 1680x1050
Intel 4965AGN Wi-fi
Perfect battery
illuminated, full keyboard
pretty nice condition
box

My friend selling it for 430 dollars. Is it worth it? What do you guys think?

4) HP nx9420
C2 T5500 1.66 GHz
4 GB DDR2
Mobility Radeon X1600 256 MB
300 GB HDD
DVD W/RW DL
17" 1400x900
battery 1,5-2 hours
full keyboard

Visually it's not in mint condition, but it's not too bad. The price is 235 dollars.

Can you share some RELEVANT )) thoughts, experiences and such about this matter? Help out a fellow quaker in the time of need. ^^

QL GFX question / problem / awesomeness (10 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 21:10 CDT, 29 September 2012 - iMsg
Hey there,

I'm pretty sure everyone saw the "SetDeviceGammaRamp failed" error message, at least once.

It's quite dark, lacks contrast, looks washed out - even the HUD -, but 2 things are awesome in it (for me):

- the visuals of the rockets; they look smaller, with less light emitting from their rear, reminds me of QuakeWorld's tracer shots without trails

- the visuals of shaft beam (especially lightningStyle 2); with SetDeviceGammaRamp failed, it looks thinner and lightningStyle 2 a bit reminds me of the QuakeWorld shaft

In both cases, I can aim better and that's why I'd like to reproduce the visuals somehow (without the error message ofc).

Can anybody help me? Is it even possible?

Need a little help with weapon binds. (21 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 05:27 CDT, 7 July 2012 - iMsg
Hello guys,

I'd like to set up my weapon binds in a way, that if I press the actual bind again, then the fov changes (or zooms in, it's not clear at the moment), and if I press it again, it goes back to normal. I presume it's some kind of a toggle-bind.

For example:
---------------
I hit "F" for shaft.
After the first press, it's just a weapon change with the cvars associated to the weapon.
After the second press, the weapon still left selected, but the fov chages (or zooms in, not clear yet).
After the third press, it's the original cvars again.
And so on.

I saw something similar like this in czm's *.cfg, but if any of you saw that, you know what a HUGE mess it is. : D

Help would be appreciated.

A little HELP needed regarding QL *.cfg (4 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 09:46 CDT, 15 June 2012 - iMsg
Hello, guys.

I have a little bit of a "problem" here.

If there's a sad-sad TankJr lying on the ground deadbodycolored, I cannot make him explode (corpsefragging), no matter which weapon I use or how much damage I deal to the corpse.
The bastard just refuses to completely desintegrate. : )

Being a "cfg-whore-in the making", it's quite embarrassing, that I don't know, which cvar is needed for this noble cause. Could anybody help me out?

ABSOLUTE minimum rig for Quake Live? (94 comments)
Posted by Freiya @ 15:12 CDT, 20 April 2012 - iMsg
Hello guys.

I have my personal thoughts, but regardless that fact, I'm wondering what do you think about the following problem: the ABSOLUTE minimum gaming rig, ONLY for Quake Live?
Without a monitor (which will be a 17" Flatron CRT for about 8-10 $) and stuff.
So the base config is which I'm interested in (CPU, RAM, VGA).

It's not a problem, if the parts are used or old (AGP and Socket 478 preferably), the only thing it matters that it has to be the CHEAPEST possible way of playing Quake Live at a stable 125 fps via 75 / 85 Hz - under any circumstances.
Of course NOT on full graphics (640 x 480 or 800 x600, r_picmip 4, bloom off, 16 bit textures, etc. - however with dynamiclight, marks and shadows on - sometimes with subdivisions 80, sometimes with subdivisions 4; but the 80 value is the more common setting overall).
The OS would be Windows XP Professional SP2 or SP3 (+ QL Prism + TeamSpeak 3).

All helpful thoughts are well appreciated.

Best Regards,
