When were the last gameplay changes to QL? (14 comments)

Does anyone remember when the last gameplay changes (that weren't reverted) were pushed through? So that would be changes to the weapon balance and movement.

Looking for fragmovie producer (QL) (50 comments)
Posted by baksteen @ 08:18 CDT, 25 June 2018 - iMsg
I have around 50 demos with timestamp laying around for years waiting to be turned into a cool fragmovie, wntt was going to do it but after 2 years of the movie being in 'production' he has let me know he does not have the time to finish it, I think it never really got anywhere.

So I'm reaching out to someone else now because I think these frags are of high quality, better than any duel fragmovie i've ever seen (much better than the first movie with my demos, '+baksteen' by Tehown from 2013 which was well received on here)

Anyone with some movie editing & wolfcam experience willing to make a nice movie out of my demos? I can send you a few sample demos so you can see the kills, all demos have a timestamp of the frag in the title, many of the demos are on the old .dm_73 format so you have to work with a wolfcam that supports both demo filetypes.

Of course you have full creative control but I just want to have a veto on certain types of music :P

Frags made between 2011-2014 iirc.

Previous movie with my demos for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8agRYhvEK4

My new demos make these frags look like a noob's

Please someone do it to let QL shine again in a nice movie.

New Duel format idea (45 comments)
Posted by baksteen @ 07:02 CST, 3 December 2017 - iMsg
Since it was mentioned that after DHW id Software was going to experiment with the duel format, I would like to propse a new duel format, one that I'm sure many have mentioned and thought of already but I thought I'd make a new thread for it and go into the pluses and minuses, and hopefully we can have a somewhat serious discusion.

Problems with the current system:
- Maps can be over quickly but can also go on for ages. Not reliable for tournament organizers who want to run on schedule (DHW first and second day have been running way over schedule)
- Defensive play after one frag is often favored. There is often barely any fragging going on. Sudden deaths after no frags are not uncommon, in some cases it can be entertaining (Clutch vs Nyx during K1llsen vs Dahang for example) but imo in most cases these rounds are boring (Anarkis)
- We see a lot of the same champions being picked.
- Considered by many as not that fun to play.

Suggestion for a new mode:
- Fixed time limit (10 mins?)
- Access to all champions. When you die with a champion you can't pick it again
- Player with most frags after the timelimit wins, in case of equal score overtime or sudden death follows. Lose all your champions and you lose.

Plus sides of this new format:
- More consistent time duration of maps
- We see all champions in action
- After dying you have a lot more options to counter the opponent's champion that killed you, which leads to more interesting champion clashes
- Less defensive play / running away / hiding

Downsides of the new format:
- Player needs to have all access to all champions in order to play the duel mode

This is the only downside I can think of, and it's maybe the only reason that id Software decided against this format thus far.

But seriously, who buys / rents just 3 champions to plays duel? I don't know anyone who does this. Either you're completely F2P and ignore Duel or you buy the champion pack. So imo it's not a valid arguement against this duel format. If this format proves more entertaining, it will only encourage new players to buy the champion pack and play it themselves.

If anyone can think of any more plus and downsides of the suggested new format, or more reasons why the current format isn't ideal, I will add them to the list.

Dreams about Quake Live (17 comments)
Posted by baksteen @ 20:29 CDT, 23 September 2017 - iMsg
So I've been dreaming about playing Quake Live lately and in these dreams it feels amazing.

I haven't played QL in months, because QC is the new shit and even though it's shit compared to QL it's where the competition is at, playing the game that Cypher and Cooller and all the old QL legends that I fell in love with are playing is more satisfying to me than playing the dead but better and more fun game, which is Quake Live.

Either way I've been dreaming of playing Quake Live lately, which never happened before I played Quake Champions. I never dreamed of playing a video game before this shit, well except you know these dreams when you play a game for 6 hours and then you go to bed and then you're like half asleep and half still playing the game in your head, you know?

Problems with the respawn system in Duel (9 comments)
Posted by baksteen @ 20:18 CDT, 23 September 2017 - iMsg
Imo there are 3 things wrong with the current respawn system in Duel, and the combination of those things in some cases create a one-sided, boring and non-competitive experience of the gametype:

- You can stand in certain spots and force certain respawn points with 100% success rate. In previous Quake games this was not possible, there were locations people would go to after killing their opponent to try and force a spawn in a certain area, and in some spots there was at best a 50% chance of forcing a certain spawnpoint, but never 100% certainty.

- You can delay your respawn for a very long time, much longer than in previous Quake games.

- You always know exactly when your opponent has respawned because the icon of their new champion will light up. Knowing when exactly your opponend had respawned was not possible in previous Quake games.

Let's take a look at how it worked in Quake Live. Let's say you just killed your opponent and start spamming a respawn point. If you don't see your opponent spawning at the spot you're spamming at, this could mean two things:

- He has already respawned at another spawn point
- He is delaying his respawn

In this case the spamming player needs to make a decision:

- He can keep spamming the spawnpoint in the hope that the opponent is delaying his spawn, but if the opponent has already spawned elsewhere then he's wasting precious seconds, since the opponent would already be collecting items and making his way back into the game. He would therefore risk losing control.
- He can stop spamming the spawnpoint and look for the opponent in a different area, or fall back onto items.

This is why in Quake Live delaying your spawn was often an effective way to avoid getting spawnfragged, because it's risky to waste time spamming a spawn point if the opponent did not show up immediately. After all, in the vast majority of the cases there was a bigger chance of him having spawned elsewhere than him delaying his respawn.

In Quake Champions, because you always know wether your opponent has already respawned or not, combined with the fact that standing in certain spots will force a spawnpoint with 100% certainty, it means that the spawnfragger can just keep spamming a spawnpoint until he hits the opponent (if done correctly), or until he sees the icon of the new champion appear, without having to worry about the opponent having spawned elsewhere and losing out on map control.

The solution would be to have more than one possible respawn point where the opponent could respawn at all times, combined with a delay of the appearing of the new champion icon, so that you don't know exactly when your opponent has respawned.
This way it would work more like in Quake Live. We will still see attempts of spawnfragging, and occassionaly we will see spawn frags, but it won't be rediculous and unavoidable like it is now.

A spawnfrag is much more significant in QC compared to QL since there are only 3 champions available per round, it's just silly to see some rounds end after the first kill followed up by 2 cheesy spawn frags.

Trading my new Logitech G Pro for a Zowie EC1-A (27 comments)
Posted by baksteen @ 06:36 CDT, 9 September 2017 - iMsg
So I got a brand new Logitech G Pro because all I could find were excellent reviews, and wanted to try something new. However, the mouse is too small for my liking, I have quite big hands and over the last 5 years of using the Cooller mouse my hand has grown to hold an EC1-A shaped mouse.

Does anyone have a reasonably new EC1-A who wants to trade it for a new Logitech G Pro?

Alternatively I'd be willing to sell mine for a reasonable price and then I'll just buy a new EC1-A.

Closest thing to Zowie EC1 Evo CL? (Cooller Mouse) (19 comments)

So the good old Cooller mouse is showing symptoms of dying after like 5 years of loyal service, now a short google session tells me the BenQ ZOWIE EC1-A is closest one to it, however I was wondering if any of you got other suggestions.

What I need in a mouse:
- EC1 size (large)
- 2 extra mouse buttons on the left side, high up there so the thumb doesn't accidentally click them

If possible:
- 1150 dpi setting so I don't need to change my sens.
- 24 interval scroll wheel (no big deal)

LordSoth and GT cup unfairness. (90 comments)
Posted by baksteen @ 03:39 CDT, 21 September 2016 - iMsg
So, yesterday I showed up on the scheduled time and date to play my GameTribes cup games, just like everyone else in the group. Matr0x, who just lost 4 games in a row, got fed up with playing and after the 4 losses he said he didn't want to play anymore and forfeited the tournament.

Today (Wednesday) I get a message from LordSoth on skype saying: 'Ok, you have to turn up today and play your game V matrox. If you do not turn up then he will get the default win. Wednesday is an over flow day for games that are not able to be finished on the tuesday.'

So let me summarize: because Matr0x didn't feel like playing anymore on the official scheduled playday, he just quit after 4 losses. Now suddenly I have to come back to play him the next day, even though I freed up my entire night on Tuesday and have a full night of other stuff on Wednesday and I can't play then, Now I'm going to get the defloss?

The gametribes cup own official rules even state that: 'Anyone who is not able to play their game on the date they are needed to play or simply do not show, then that player or players will forfeit their game'. So sounds to me he made that 'overflow day' up on the fly to cover Matrox' ass.

So really, wtf?

Does anyone know if the Zowie mice these days are any good? On their website they only have 3 different models. Anyone have any experience with these? Especially the EC-A series look interesting.

How has reflex changed since the very first buyable version came out? Back then the game didn't feel that great to me and it crashed every 10 minutes.

I've seen in a fragmovie that there are now map textures, but other than that, what are the things that have changed since then? (I guess since aprox a year ago)

125FPS Fake Account Debate & MORE YAYO (154 comments)
Posted by baksteen @ 06:30 CDT, 10 September 2014 - iMsg
Hello all,

After seeing some players in group B lose to this guy Razorback (brand new account, 80 duels played, 2000+ elo already) some saw their chances of passing the group decline. Seeing this upset me.

I know a lot of people might think it's not a big deal to play with a fake account, but please let me try to give you an idea of why this should not be allowed:

The main reason is the following. By using a fake account your statistics (best maps, worst maps, weapons, playstyle etc) become anonymous. The fakenicker still has all this knowledge about his opponents, and can use this to great advantage during the map picking. The fair player can only hope to pick his best map after the removals, which is NOT the strategy that you would often use while picking maps vs other fair players, as you also take your oponents weak maps into consideration.

Unfortunately it seems to be impossible to get Nico (the main 125fps admin) to realize this. Some logs:

`? just play your best maps ). razor probably is fake, but and what? he is not players of evil/cypher level, so why you care?` - Nico

Why do I care? Cause he's still good enough to beat other fair players in the groupstage, which might not have happened if he'd play on his real account. This one shows Nico has no clue about how fakenicking influences mappicking.

Žbryan, we played without this stats from q1 era` - Nico

This makes me sad because he completely seems to be oblivious about the fact that with fakenicking in QL, there's still ONE player of the two with access to his oponents statistics...

So please 125fps, realize this is some form of cheating and block all obviously experienced players with less than 300 duels or so on the account from participating, Faceit had such a rule and for a good reason.

Why I can't play good anymore (182 comments)
Posted by baksteen @ 07:52 CST, 6 January 2014 - iMsg
Dear ESReality and especially the people that still support me as a player.

I'm not saying you should care about this post. I know most of you won't give a shit and that's totaly fine, but I know there are some guys out there who might be interested in hearing what I have to say, since to this day I still get friend adds everyday from people who ask me questions about the game and when I'm going to start playing good again.

After hearing DDK's and Zoot's very kind words about me on stream, and afterwards being raped on the facey I felt like I needed to get this off my chest. I always hear the same thing. 'Baksteen, he was good and a rising star, but suddenly dissapeared'. It has become like my default stream-introduction everytime I play a tournament (yes, I always watch back my games that were streamed). But actually, I never really dissapeared. I'd like to try to explain what happened and perhaps it's usefull information for people who desperately want to improve.

After a long while, I discovered that to be able to play at your best, and to improve rapidly, you need to have 2 things: Loads of love for the game, and a motivator, something that makes you want to set goals for yourself and achieve them. As soon as these 2 things are gone, your skill will magically decrease. Well, this is how it is for me. For example, in the early days I used to improve extremely fast, because I craved the respect from top players. I remember meeting dem0n (I already knew him as a very good player, among with all the other 'gods' that I saw on IEM tournaments) on a server that had t9 (house of decay) running, I gave him a good run for his money and he told me I could become a top player in the benelux (NL/BE) scene. Things like this gave me so much motivation that I could almost effortlessly improve very rapidly. For a while after that I was a decent player for a while, until the Adroits LAN in the Netherlands was anounced, and I decided to attend and use that as a motivator. Up until that point I'd never come further than quarter finals in Zotac cups, but all of a sudden after a few weeks of dedicated practice, I ended up in 3 Faceit finals in a row, winning 2 of those. During all this time I also really loved quake. Even when I wasn't playing, I would often catch myself thinking about ways to outplay oponents. U could say I was sort of fascinated with the tactical/philosophical aspects of quake. Even though I've never been a good aimer, I still managed to play very good versus good players with much stronger aim, all because of my love for the game. After the LAN,
my performance suddenly got a lot worse and for a long time I didn't understand why, as I had changed nothing like settings or practice time. But after a while it became clear to me that it's because of the lack of a motivator, and unfortunately also because of lack of love for the game.

Ever since I realized what was wrong I've been struggling to get these 2 things back. But I realized it's nearly impossible at the current stage of life I'm in right now. It's typical for me. Without these 2 things I can play for 4 hours a day and not learn a single thing. I'm going to take a break from playing tournaments,
I'll play some practice games for fun, but until I find some long peroid of quietness, and find something that really motivates me to play and love the game again the way I used to, I know I won't ever come close to the level I used to be at.

So, to all the people trying to improve, ask yourself if you have these two things.

I'd like to thank all the people who to this day still support me, even though I haven't done anything remarkable in at least 1.5 years. I've really enjoyed your support and I'm always happy to help you, in fact, probably the most joy I get out of quake these days is when I'm helping others that are seriously motivated to learn. If you are one of these guys and want me to guide you, don't be scared to add me and say hi.

</attentionwhoring>? nah, just felt like some of you might be interested in this. :-)

The mouse has to be able to run at 500hz without having to overclock it manually for windows 7. Low lift off distance (dunno how it's called exactly) is a must too. No drivers is a good thing too. I was thinking about the Zowie EC1 evo. Anyone here who has got experience with this mouse?

USB Audio stutter problem. (6 comments)
Posted by baksteen @ 12:02 CDT, 22 April 2013 - iMsg
Dear guys,

I have a problem with my pc. Audio devices through USB don't work well. The audio glitches and stutters from time to time. I'm positive it's a problem with my PC, drivers or settings, and not the audio devices. I have this problem with all USB ports in my PC. Jack cable devices work with no problem.

Really strange thing I noticed: When playing quakelive, there is no stuttering or glitching at all. Even crazier: I found out that whenever I'm running quakelive, I have no audio problems at all, I can listen to music with no problems. I don't know much about hardware and software, but this has led me to believe that there's nothing wrong with my USB ports, but some settings perhaps.

Someone know more?

Thanks.

Quakecon 2010 Finals demos/HQ vods?? (5 comments)
Posted by baksteen @ 15:02 CDT, 13 April 2013 - iMsg
Trying to regain some motivation, I was reading a Cypher interview from 2011, where he spoke about the Quakecon 2010 finals vs Cooller:

I think we showed some really amazing Quake, which shows people that this is a very high quality game. I was more than happy, because that victory wasn't easy. I put a lot of work and energy in to win that tournament. It was one of the best moments in my life to recognize what kind of hard work was done to make it real. Yes it was the toughest and greatest final for me. It was one of my best games for sure.

Ofcourse admins lost the demos and all we were left with are low quality vids that seem to be ripped of the stream. (http://www.youtube.com/user/QCon2010tempVODS)

An old ESR thread claimed that spectator demos can be downloaded here: http://www.4seasonsgaming.com/forums/viewtopi...425#p10425 , however, I cannot unzip the files as winrar claims 'the archive is corrupt'?

So, does anyone know if there's any way to fix those files? Or maybe someone has the working demos? Vods? Anything?

Thanks in advance.

Let's make duel more interesting. (98 comments)
Posted by baksteen @ 15:37 CDT, 17 June 2011 - iMsg
By spawning a Quad and/or Haste 60 or 30 seconds before the end of a duel, on a fixed place in the map.

By doing this we make up for the 10 minute timelimit, which led to playstyles like: take control at start, make frags and camp out the game.

We will see more epic comebacks, less camping games out, and it will bring new excitement to play duel.

players will now play hard until the end. and not camp

Lets make a situation to test this.

Map: Bloodrun
Time: 60 seconds left
Score: Player.a 8 - 6 Player.b

Player.b is in control, he needs just 2 frags to tie the game, but Player.a is camping the lower YA teleporter. Quad and/or haste spawns in plasma room. Ofcourse player.a doesn't challenge for it since player.b is in control. He will pick up the powerup and actualy has a chance to tie up the game.

It's just unfair that a player can camp out games so easily with the 10 minutes timelimit. In my opinion this is a solution, and it will bring revolution to the gameplay of duel.

Who is with me?

we could at least add it as devpick to test... i'm sure it will change the gameplay in a positive way.
